On Friday 24th March, members of the English Vaulting Squad battled their way through the pouring rain to arrive tired and hungry at Devon Leisure in Scotland, where the second selection trial for WEG was being held. After a quick meal rustled up by Lucy Bell, the vaulters made their way over to the travel lodge nearby to get a good night sleep before the long weekend ahead.
Saturday morning we were up bright and early ready for our compulsories, which all went very well. The freestyle was also a success, because although there were a few mistakes the overall impression was good. The individuals vaulted well too, most of them carrying on to do the second round the next day. Unluckily, Becky just missed out on getting a 6 for competing abroad, but wasn’t disheartened and was determined to train even harder for next time.
On Sunday tensions were high as there was close competition between the two advanced teams up for selection. Fortunately, after another good freestyle EVS were placed first with a score of 6.758. The individuals were also placed well with 4 of our female vaulters making the top 5. Ricky vaulted nicely on our new horse Go Fast, who Julie was very proud of, and ended up a close second with a score of 6.239.
